WHEN DOES A LOCAL CHURCH LEAVE CHRIST AND BECOME JUST AN HUMAN ORGANIZATION?

Introduction:

The Lord’s church has been challenged by this danger during most of the centuries of its existence. It was only a few hundred years from the beginning of the church on the day of Pentecost with about three thousand people in Jerusalem, until the establishment of a religious organization that called itself the church, but persecuted all who would dare to follow Christ.

Many times, people fail to recognize the changes until it is too late. A local congregation can begin with a dedication to New Testament teaching and practice, and with conviction, and commitment to Christ’s command to go and teach the word, but gradually become less and less a group dedicated to Christ that cares for people and more and more an organization that protects and promotes itself and its own interests.

How and why does this occur, how can we detect such changes, and what must be done about them? These are important questions that must be explored, and answers must be given. The first important lesson comes from what the Bible says about the nature of the church. Paul gave us this lesson by inspiration of the the Spirit of God in 1 Corinthians 12:12-27:

12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body–Jews or Greeks, slaves or free–and all were made to drink of one Spirit. 14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, 24 which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25 that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. 27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.

God tells us that the nature of the church is that of a body, with one head and many members. Truly, this comparison teaches us many things, among them the following:

    • All coordination comes from Christ, the only head, and all members must obey
    • All members are important and none is more important than the other.
    • All members are dependent upon the other members, and all members must be dependable.
    • Every member must know and obey the guidance of Christ’s word in the Bible and carry out his/her function in the body.
    • There are no extra members that are not needed or that one would wish to do without.
    • It is not acceptable that a majority should look to a few to do everything and others should take little or no part.

The first clue is, then, that for a congregation to remain connected to the spiritual Head (Christ), it must be guided by Christ and his word only! When “leaders” decide what parts of God’s word are important and which are not or change the teaching of God’s word, and the congregation is willing to follow that, the connection with the Head is severed. This gives rise to human authority which is denounced by God’s word as diabolical. We find in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4:

3 Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, 4 who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.

When people accept only parts of the word and refuse to allow teaching of all the word, for fear that someone will be disturbed by it, they are putting themselves in the place of God and are obstructing the teaching of the His word.

The only way we can be blameless and “innocent of the blood of all” is to preach and teach all the word. Speaking to the elders of the church at Ephesus, Paul said in Acts 20:26-30:

26 Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all of you, 27 for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. 28 Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. 29 I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; 30 and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them.

Elders are responsible for the teaching of the word in a powerful and convincing way in order to stop the false teaching of those who would carry the members away from Christ for their own purposes. Titus 1:9-11:

9 He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it. 10 For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party. 11 They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.

Once certain people in a congregation decide to obstruct the complete teaching of the word, whether for fear of the reaction of some or because of personal preference, and the members accept that, the process has begun for the separation of the congregation from Christ and the formation of a human organizational entity that can no longer fulfill the work of Christ, due to its separation from Him. 2 John 1:9 says plainly:

Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.

Once this separation occurs and the organization is guided by human reasoning, additional false teaching and practices will ensue, and the separation from the truth will gradually be yet more apparent. Because the group, now a human organization, still bears the name of our Savior, it will serve as a stumbling-block and a bad reputation for those who happen to become involved with it.

At first these changes will seem small, usually starting with the inability to correct those who drift into sin or those that begin to teach things not provable by the Scriptures. Often the emphasis changes from purity of life and bringing others to Christ to an emphasis on social occasions among the members and “good deeds” in the community, and there is an increasing dependence upon professionals to do most of the work.

There will be a resistance to any effort by members to correct the error that is accumulating, and an effort to squelch any voices that seem to be contrary to the status quo. Any member who differs and attempts do say or do something to restore the church to its faithfulness to Christ and obedience to God’s word will be considered a “troublemaker,” and may be invited to find another place to worship. This “invitation” will, in many cases, be acted upon, resulting finally in a group consisting of only “like minded” individuals or, at least, individuals who will fear to say or do anything that might provoke the disapproval of the leadership.

When the error in a congregation has reached this point, the leadership will have taken on a fully self-protective mode of operation, only allowing teaching to be done by those who are known to espouse the status quo. Any others will not be allowed to take part in any position of influence. Any way of thinking that might seem to threaten the power of the leadership or the financial well-being of the organization will be rooted out more effectively and ruthlessly than any sin, false teaching, or unscriptural practice ever was. The teaching will be strictly controlled and will reinforce existing errors and add to the errors that have already become a part of the group’s practice.

You will notice that at this point the word “group” is used. This is because the transformation has been fully made from the Lord’s church to a human organization. This concept is Biblical, because it is taught clearly by our Lord in Rev 2:4-5:

4 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.

The identifying marks of such departure are the following:

    • Decreased emphasis on the teaching and training of all members in the detailed knowledge of God’s word
    • Decreased participation and involvement of the members in general
    • Decreased care for the spiritual situation of each member and lessened involvement of each of the members in the lives and needs of other members
    • Increased dependence upon religious “professionals” to do the things that all the members should be doing
    • Avoidance of certain specific biblical issues that are considered unpopular or “controversial”
    • Correction of sin in the lives of individual members disappears
    • The teaching and preaching is only entrusted to certain “approved” individuals who emphasize only certain parts of the Scripture and neglect others according to the will of the leadership.
    • Lack of general emphasis in local evangelism and its replacement with “community involvement” and “good deeds”
    • A closed leadership with the suppression of any ideas not held by that leadership
    • The establishment of teaching and practices that are not biblically based

The difficulty involved in correcting such departures:

Such a transformation of a local church devoted to God’s purposes into a religious group governed by human control often takes place gradually, so gradually in fact, that many are not aware of what has happened. The previous rich spiritual heritage of the congregation, possibly spanning many years, makes it difficult for some to accept that such a transformation could have occurred. So the first barrier to any reversal of such departures is that many in the group do not accept the fact that a departure has taken place.

The second barrier is that, since the authority of the Scriptures is no longer respected, a return to it is not likely to occur, short of general repentance in the group and its leadership. Since the teaching is strictly controlled and the decision making process is a closed one, such a change does not easily occur.

The third barrier is that once certain habits of thinking and practice have established themselves, it is difficult to promote change. People do not often analyze how things have gotten to where they are, and short of a radical change in teaching, which is not probable because of the existing leadership, such a re-examination of beliefs and practices is unlikely, to say the least!

For the reasons mentioned above, we must face the fact that a return of such groups to their former faithfulness to Christ is not likely to occur unless something very unusual takes place. It is necessary to observe that the Lord’s work cannot be accomplished within groups that have surrendered themselves to human control.

What do we learn from all this?

    • That the leadership of men is dangerous; we don’t need to look to men, we need to be disciples of Christ.
    • That we all need to know the word of God and not just depend on what others say. The power has always been in the word and not in men.
    • That when we look toward men, instead of doing what God says in his word, it is deadly!

Then, brothers and sisters, let’s follow Christ!

WHAT THE CHURCH IS AND WHAT IT MUST DO

Many think of the church as a group that does something for them. It provides a sense of comfort or encouragement, companionship, inspiration to do what one needs to do in life. Or maybe it provides spiritual formation for one’s children, or help in material needs or financial assistance.

In all of these things, people look to an organization for some benefit for one’s own life, and tend to think of the church as an organization, as “they.” People are heard to say concerning the place they attend that “they” have a good educational program, or good pulpit preaching, or good music.

In all of this, the tendency is to think of the church as an organization that does something for us. But, thinking it that way, the church is not “we” but “they.” And, when “they” don’t do what we want or need, we just look for another place, much as we would look for another doctor, laundry, or grocery store. This is totally foreign to the concept of the church that we learn about in the Bible. The Bible teaches us that “we” are members of the Lord’s church and we are serving God by serving others.

Paul wrote by the inspiration of the Spirit when he said in 1 Corinthians 12:27: “Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.” So, according to the word of God the church is not “they” but us! Each one who has obeyed Christ to enter into his body the church is a part of it. It is not an organization whose purpose is to serve us, but we are a body to serve others.

This is the way that Christ lived. In Luke 19:10, we find Jesus saying: “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Is it not fitting that Christ’s spiritual body, the church, should be doing the same? Instead of making ourself comfortable and served, should we not be serving the spiritual needs of the world? Matthew 20:28 records Jesus’ words: “even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

And in Matthew 28:18-20 we find these words:

18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

So we find this dual purpose of the church, to make disciples and to teach them to do all that Christ had taught them to do, and surely part of that is make sure they know to carry that message to others. So, the church has a purpose, not to make itself served and comfortable, but as the Scripture says in 1 Peter 2:9:

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Yes, the church is the all the things mentioned in this verse, but we are all that in order to be able to perform a purpose that is outward directed, toward the lost, as Jesus’ life was.

We must face it, most modern religion has got it all wrong, and that difference of purpose is taking people off in the wrong direction. The reason we are what we are is not just for us. It is so that we can do what needs to be done. It is not to make us happy, prosperous, successful in business and life so that we can have what we want, but the purpose of the church is to follow the example of Christ and supply the word of God to others.

Notice what God says to the church in 1 Timothy 3:15:

“if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, pillar and buttress of the truth.”

Did you notice what the church is called? It does not say we are the benevolence center, the Red Cross, the do-all-to-please-all mega-church, or a social club, but the only supporting body for the truth that God has given to us in this world. Many can provide physical needs, social services, and such, but only the church of the Lord, Jesus Christ, can give the truth of God to people, the truth that will make the difference in this world and in the destiny of the soul after this life. Only the church can do that!

The people of God will help many in their material needs, and will console and be gentle loving friends to many, because they love, but they know that their main function is not just that, but rather to give to the people of the world what they need most, the knowledge of God’s will, so that they may be saved. If we fail in that, we fail to be like Christ, fail to show His love, and fail to accomplish His purpose.

CONCLUSION:

    • What are we doing as the church of the Lord, Jesus Christ?
    • Are we individually preparing ourselves to speak to others?
    • Are we personally carrying the message of salvation to others?
    • Are we working in His same purpose?
    • If you have left the purpose of Christ and have been serving your own purposes, repent and return to Him now!

10 PITFALLS OF THE SEASON

1. Assigning a religious significance to a day not specified in the Scriptures or becoming upset because others give gifts or enjoy the season to be with friends and family.

There is of course no Biblical basis for observing Christmas as a day or season. Although the Bible has told us how Christ was born, it never tells us exactly what day. Nor would it be correct for the Church to observe it as part of worship, because there is not that command or example, and the Church should be governed by the word of God and not religious tradition.

But, on the other hand, as long as one is not assigning a spiritual significance, we should not be critical of those who use this time to give gifts to others, enjoy good food, or spend time with family and friends. But, remember that this season of the year does have its dangers. The matter is really more serious than we sometimes think, and there are real points of danger in these days, and we should be ready to recognize them.

Let us look for a few moments at what those might be, and out of a motive of love for others, we will suggest some ways to avoid the pitfalls of these days that we pass through each year.

2. Spending too much

With our emotions high and our concerns that our gift be treasured and appreciated, some spend more than is rational, justifying the expense by saying that the person is worth it or that the season just comes once a year. However, bills can pile up to a point that they are felt well beyond this season of the year. Such bills become a burden that can distract us from our service to God, causing some to work long hours to pay debts and causing some to fail in giving to the Lord’s work as they should.

Often there can be problems in marriages. There can be anger, heated discussions and unnecessary strains on the marriage relationship, sometimes even violence! There are always more people that we know and love than we could ever buy gifts for. In addition, is it rational to think that people value us according to what we give them as gifts at this time of the year?

Perhaps if the person has that way of thinking, we should consider giving nothing to them at all so that he or she might learn another way of valuing his friends or loved ones. Do we not rather show our love through what we do each day of the year?

Suggestions:

Perhaps we could give less expensive gifts that are things that we ourselves have made or give thoughtful little things that we, because of our personal knowledge and concern for the person, can give that no one else would think to give. It is the quality of thoughtfulness, not the monetary value that will make the impression. Anyone with a credit card can spend money! Only a thoughtful, loving person can see a person’s real needs.

a. Remember, you are a steward of what God gives you. Use it wisely, remembering spiritual priorities!!!

b. If you are married, consider planning your buying together and setting amounts that will not be exceeded in order to avoid problems later.

c. Make it clear to your family members (and be honest) that you do not require expensive gifts of your loved ones and do not think that they should put themselves in financial difficulty to please you.

d. Make a conscious decision not to generate serious personal and marital problems, because of over- spending!!

3. Planning for everything to be perfect

As one approaches any event he considers important or enjoyable, it is common to form expectations about just how one wants everything to be. However, it is also common to form expectations that are so high that the expectations, themselves, become a problem.

Have you ever started into something and wanted it to be just right. You work, prepare, and provide everything so that everything will be just perfect; your best effort. But, very soon, you discover a problem–others are not working at it as hard as you and don’t take it as seriously as you do. That’s where the hard feelings start. “I’ve worked so hard and no one else cooperates. They don’t help me! They just don’t care.” Naturally, the next step is to think, “Well, if they don’t care about all that I have done, and they don’t pay attention to all the work I’ve done, they don’t care about me or love me either.” And so, on it goes and as we become miserable, we pass that feeling on to others as we express our hard feelings. If someone tries to cheer us up, we resist their efforts, making them feel frustrated as well.

We have to stop and think, is this what God wants us to do? We turn a family time into a family misery time, all because we wanted it to be perfect.

Isn’t it odd? We accomplish the opposite of what we wanted. We tell ourselves that we are doing it for others, but is it possible that there is a bit of selfishness in how we are going about the matter? You can see that in the end, we don’t really serve anyone’s well-being, going about it in this way, not even our own. And we are certainly not doing God’s will if we are speaking badly of others and making their lives miserable and ours, as well.

Remember:

1 Corinthians 16:14 Let all your things be done with charity (love).

Things don’t have to come out just as we planned them to be good and enjoyable.

4. Trying to please everyone.

Life is not that way! We can never please everyone, but we can and must please God.

5. Focusing on what we don’t have and placing our emphasis on things

Many will be without what they need during this season. For them, these days may be especially hard. Also, many will find it easy to put too much emphasis on material things.

Luke 12:15 And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”

1 John 2:1: Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

6. Thinking about those who are no longer with us and times that are past.

At this time of the year, we think of the ones we have lost or those that live far away; those who have been so significant to us, but are no longer with us. In the past, they made the season what it was, now we are faced with the reality of living through this season without them. The older one is, the more he/she feels this. As children, we hardly felt this at all. These feelings are natural. But often while feeling such things, do we fail to enjoy those we have around us because of our sadness about those who we cannot have near? Will we forget the ones who live around us, who would like to enjoy our company? Should we make others suffer. Is that what Christ would have us do?

Luke 6:31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

Selfishly burying ourselves in our grief over past losses will not help those are with us now who love us or who might need our comfort. We must exert certain self-control on our minds and thoughts.

2 Peter 1:6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance (Greek: self-control) patience; and to patience godliness;

Suggestion:

Try to find those who have similar losses and sadness, and do what you can to help them. You may find that cheering others will be a way that you can find enjoyment for yourself.

7. Conflicts with others

During this season we are often in contact with people that we don’t see during much of the year. Old conflicts and personality differences can provide the opportunity for arguments, especially if there is considerable drinking. We would do well to be aware of this pitfall and avoid it. If we have wronged someone, the season may give us an opportunity to ask forgiveness and leave those problems in the past.

8. Getting overly tired and expecting everyone else to put the same emphasis on the preparations.

In these days, we find so much to do. It is easy to become over-stretched, over commit, and try to do to much, even if we have good health. This can result in becoming more irritable and emotional or possibly even falling ill. God does not want us to do damage to our health or become irritable and say and do things we should not.

Also, not everyone will put the same importance on the preparations that you do. Not understanding that from the beginning may cause us to become disappointed and and angry with others for not helping accomplish our goals. Do what you can and want to do. If others will not help, you will have to limit your efforts to what you can accomplish. If your husband or wife needs your help, try to be understanding, and help out with their plans if you can.

9. Exposing oneself to temptation

There is a danger that exists for Christians at this time of year in respect to social events. Accepting certain invitations can lead us into situations where we know the temptation to abuse alcohol or participate in entertainment that is not suitable for a Christian is entirely too strong. We must keep our example strong. As Christians, we often find it necessary to refuse such invitations, no matter how important they may seem to be socially or professionally. Watch your example and influence. Make sure they shine!!

Matthew 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

10. Failing to keep in mind what is really important

The importance that some put on these days can cause some to loose their sense of perspective. It is easy to be caught up in it all and forget what is really important. Common sense is often lost, and we think and act in ways that are not wise.

Remember:

The spiritual values and endeavors are always the most important and must be put first even at this time of the year. We will have to live with what we say and do in this part of the year even into next year, and maybe for the rest of our life.

Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

EL AMOR A LA VERDAD

2 Tesalonicenses 2:8 -12

8  Y entonces se manifestará aquel inicuo, a quien el Señor matará con el espíritu de su boca, y destruirá con el resplandor de su venida;  9 inicuo cuyo advenimiento es por obra de Satanás, con gran poder y señales y prodigios mentirosos, 10  y con todo engaño de iniquidad para los que se pierden, por cuanto no recibieron el amor de la verdad para ser salvos. 11  Por esto Dios les envía un poder engañoso, para que crean la mentira, 12  a fin de que sean condenados todos los que no creyeron a la verdad, sino que se complacieron en la injusticia.

  I. INTRODUCCIÓN

     A. El amor a la verdad es importante y estos versículos explican por qué.

     B. La falta del amor a la verdad hace que perdamos lo más importante de la vida.

    C. Trae sobre nosotros la condenación

 II. ¿De que verdad habla y salvos de qué?

     A. Es bueno que uno busque y respete la verdad en todo lo que hace.

         1. En la agricultura, ingeniería, negocio, o cualquier otro asunto en la vida.

         2. La verdad siempre es importante.

     B. Pero estos versículos refieren a la verdad en cuanto de la salvación espiritual de la condenación de Dios por causa de nuestros pecados. Juan 17:17 “…tu palabra es verdad”

III. ¿CÓMO SABEMOS QUE AMAMOS A LA VERDAD?

    A. Buscamos lo que amamos.

    B. No aceptamos el error por conveniencia.

    C. Defendemos y levantamos en alto la verdad Filipenses 1:7

como me es justo sentir esto de todos vosotros, por cuanto os tengo en el corazón; y en mis prisiones, y en la defensa y confirmación del evangelio, todos vosotros sois participantes conmigo de la gracia.

    D. Obedecemos la verdad no importa el costo.

        1. Proverbios 23:23

Compra la verdad, y no la vendas; La sabiduría, la enseñanza y la inteligencia.

        2. La verdad nos hace espiritualmente libres. Juan 8:32

“y conoceréis la verdad, y la verdad os hará libres.”

       3. Nos muestra el camino correcto y segura. Salmos 119:105

“Lámpara es a mis pies tu palabra,Y lumbrera a mi camino.”

       4. Nos hace odiar todos los caminos falsos o equivocados. Salmos 119:104

De tus mandamientos he adquirido inteligencia; Por tanto, he aborrecido todo camino de mentira….

       5. La verdad nos santifica. Juan 17:17 “Santifícalos en tu verdad; tu palabra es            verdad.”

 IV. ¿AMA UD. A LA VERDAD?

      A. Algunos aman a si mismos. 2 Timoteo 3:2

Porque habrá hombres amadores de sí mismos, avaros, vanagloriosos, soberbios, blasfemos, desobedientes a los padres, ingratos, impíos,

      B. Algunos aman el placer 2 Timoteo 3:4

traidores, impetuosos, infatuados, amadores de los deleites más que de Dios,

      C. Algunos aman al dinero 1 Timoteo 6:10

porque raíz de todos los males es el amor al dinero, el cual codiciando algunos, se extraviaron de la fe, y fueron traspasados de muchos dolores.

      D. Algunos aman la aprobación de la gente. Mateo 23:2-7

En la cátedra de Moisés se sientan los escribas y los fariseos. 3 Así que, todo lo que os digan que guardéis, guardadlo y hacedlo; mas no hagáis conforme a sus obras, porque dicen, y no hacen. 4 Porque atan cargas pesadas y difíciles de llevar, y las ponen sobre los hombros de los hombres; pero ellos ni con un dedo quieren moverlas. 5 Antes, hacen todas sus obras para ser vistos por los hombres. Pues ensanchan sus filacterias, y extienden los flecos de sus mantos; 6 y aman los primeros asientos en las cenas, y las primeras sillas en las sinagogas, 7 y las salutaciones en las plazas, y que los hombres los llamen: Rabí, Rabí.

      E. ¿Qué ama Ud? Si no amamos más la verdad de Dios que todas otra cosa en el mundo, no podemos seguir a Cristo.

Mateo 10:37-39 El que ama a padre o madre más que a mí, no es digno de mí; el que ama a hijo o hija más que a mí, no es digno de mí; 38 y el que no toma su cruz y sigue en pos de mí, no es digno de mí. 39 El que halla su vida, la perderá; y el que pierde su vida por causa de mí, la hallará.

El temor a la muerte hace mucho daño en la vida. No nos permite la libertad de servir a Dios ni ser las personas que queremos ser. En esta lección, vamos a ver como el temor a la muerte afecta la vida y cómo podemos ser libres de este temor.

El Diablo acusaba delante de Dios que las personas ponen primero su vida física delante de todas las cosas.

Job 2:1-10

1 Aconteció que otro día vinieron los hijos de Dios para presentarse delante de Jehová, y Satanás vino también entre ellos presentándose delante de Jehová. 2 Y dijo Jehová a Satanás: ¿De dónde vienes? Respondió Satanás a Jehová, y dijo: De rodear la tierra, y de andar por ella. 3 Y Jehová dijo a Satanás: ¿No has considerado a mi siervo Job, que no hay otro como él en la tierra, varón perfecto y recto, temeroso de Dios y apartado del mal, y que todavía retiene su integridad, aun cuando tú me incitaste contra él para que lo arruinara sin causa? 4 Respondiendo Satanás, dijo a Jehová: Piel por piel, todo lo que el hombre tiene dará por su vida. 5 Pero extiende ahora tu mano, y toca su hueso y su carne, y verás si no blasfema contra ti en tu misma presencia. 6 Y Jehová dijo a Satanás: He aquí, él está en tu mano; mas guarda su vida. 7 Entonces salió Satanás de la presencia de Jehová, e hirió a Job con una sarna maligna desde la planta del pie hasta la coronilla de la cabeza. 8 Y tomaba Job un tiesto para rascarse con él, y estaba sentado en medio de ceniza. 9 Entonces le dijo su mujer: ¿Aún retienes tu integridad? Maldice a Dios, y muérete. 10 Y él le dijo: Como suele hablar cualquiera de las mujeres fatuas, has hablado. ¿Qué? ¿Recibiremos de Dios el bien, y el mal no lo recibiremos? En todo esto no pecó Job con sus labios.

Aunque no estaba cierto lo que habló el Diablo en el caso de Job, sí es cierto en cuanto de la mayoría de la gente.

La muerte es física es segura: Hebreos 9:27:

Y de la manera que está establecido para los hombres que mueran una sola vez, y después de esto el juicio,

La evidencia de esto está a la vista, alrededor de todos nosotros—los funerales, los anuncios de los muertes en los periódicos, los muertes de amigos y familiares.

Eclesiastés 7:2

Mejor es ir a la casa del luto que a la casa del banquete; porque aquello es el fin de todos los hombres, y el que vive lo pondrá en su corazón.

I. Pero, el temor a la muerte nos esclaviza.

Como nos dice Hebreos 2:14-15:

Así que, por cuanto los hijos participaron de carne y sangre, él también participó de lo mismo, para destruir por medio de la muerte al que tenía el imperio de la muerte, esto es, al diablo, 15 y librar a todos los que por el temor de la muerte estaban durante toda la vida sujetos a servidumbre.

Esto lo sabía Jesús y dijo en Lucas 9:22-26:

y diciendo: Es necesario que el Hijo del Hombre padezca muchas cosas, y sea desechado por los ancianos, por los principales sacerdotes y por los escribas, y que sea muerto, y resucite al tercer día. 23 Y decía a todos: Si alguno quiere venir en pos de mí, niéguese a sí mismo, tome su cruz cada día, y sígame. Porque todo el que quiera salvar su vida, la perderá; y todo el que pierda su vida por causa de mí, éste la salvará. 25 Pues ¿qué aprovecha al hombre, si gana todo el mundo, y se destruye o se pierde a sí mismo? 26 Porque el que se avergonzare de mí y de mis palabras, de éste se avergonzará el Hijo del Hombre cuando venga en su gloria, y en la del Padre, y de los santos ángeles.

Tratando de salvar su situación en la vida, y la vida acá en la tierra, la mayoría buscan las cosas terrenales más que las espirituales. Por miedo de la muerte, hacen cosas que no deben, y dejan sin hacerse lo que son las más importantes. Por buscar preservar a la vida en esta tierra, pierden lo más importante, la vida de su alma, y la vida eterna.

II. Como hemos visto, la muerte de Cristo nos hace libres. ¿En qué manera nos libra del miedo de la muerte lo que hizo Jesús?

A. Nos libra porque nos consideramos muertos ya.

2 Corintios 5:14-15

Porque el amor de Cristo nos constriñe, pensando esto: que si uno murió por todos, luego todos murieron; 15 y por todos murió, para que los que viven, ya no vivan para sí, sino para aquel que murió y resucitó por ellos.

Gálatas 2:20 Con Cristo estoy juntamente crucificado, y ya no vivo yo, mas vive Cristo en mí; y lo que ahora vivo en la carne, lo vivo en la fe del Hijo de Dios, el cual me amó y se entregó a sí mismo por mí.

Hechos 20:24

Pero de ninguna cosa hago caso, ni estimo preciosa mi vida para mí mismo, con tal que acabe mi carrera con gozo, y el ministerio que recibí del Señor Jesús, para dar testimonio del evangelio de la gracia de Dios.

B. Nos libra, porque el aguijón de la muerte, el pecado, Cristo lo ha quitado.

1 Corintios 15:53-57

Porque es necesario que esto corruptible se vista de incorrupción, y esto mortal se vista de inmortalidad. 54 Y cuando esto corruptible se haya vestido de incorrupción, y esto mortal se haya vestido de inmortalidad, entonces se cumplirá la palabra que está escrita: Sorbida es la muerte en victoria. 55 ¿Dónde está, oh muerte, tu aguijón? ¿Dónde, oh sepulcro, tu victoria? 56 ya que el aguijón de la muerte es el pecado, y el poder del pecado, la ley. 57 Mas gracias sean dadas a Dios, que nos da la victoria por medio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.

C. Nos libra, porque vemos una esperanza mejor que el vivir acá en este cuerpo.

2 Corintios 5:1

1 Porque sabemos que si nuestra morada terrestre, este tabernáculo, se deshiciere, tenemos de Dios un edificio, una casa no hecha de manos, eterna, en los cielos. 2 Y por esto también gemimos, deseando ser revestidos de aquella nuestra habitación celestial; 3 pues así seremos hallados vestidos, y no desnudos. 4 Porque asimismo los que estamos en este tabernáculo gemimos con angustia; porque no quisiéramos ser desnudados, sino revestidos, para que lo mortal sea absorbido por la vida. 5 Mas el que nos hizo para esto mismo es Dios, quien nos ha dado las arras del Espíritu. 6 Así que vivimos confiados siempre, y sabiendo que entre tanto que estamos en el cuerpo, estamos ausentes del Señor 7 (porque por fe andamos, no por vista); 8 pero confiamos, y más quisiéramos estar ausentes del cuerpo, y presentes al Señor.

III. Esta libertad hace posible ciertas cosas en la vida.

A. Nos hace libres para sufrir

Apocalipsis 2:10 No temas en nada lo que vas a padecer. He aquí, el diablo echará a algunos de vosotros en la cárcel, para que seáis probados, y tendréis tribulación por diez días. Sé fiel hasta la muerte, y yo te daré la corona de la vida.

B. Nos hace libres para ayudar a otros.

1 Juan 3:16

En esto hemos conocido el amor, en que él puso su vida por nosotros; también nosotros debemos poner nuestras vidas por los hermanos.

C. Nos hace libres para alcanzar algo mejor que esta vida; no sentimos que tenemos que tenerlo todo acá.

Apocalipsis 12:11

Y ellos le han vencido por medio de la sangre del Cordero y de la palabra del testimonio de ellos, y menospreciaron sus vidas hasta la muerte.

IV. Aplicación a la Vida

A. ¿Para qué está viviendo Ud?

B. ¿Tiene el diablo la razón en cuanto de Ud? Él dijo que uno daría cualquiera cosa para su vida, y él busca ponernos en esclavitud y controlarnos.

C. ¿Y Ud., qué pone primero?

D. ¿Teme Ud. la muerte?

E. ¿Es Ud. como muchos que dicen cuando justifican la mentira, el engaño, y el robo dicen “Pues, tengo que vivir, ¿no?”

F. ¿Tiene todavía el pecado en la vida, en tal forma que el pecado todavía tiene su aguijón?

G. O es Ud. como Pablo quien dijo, “Porque para mí el vivir es Cristo, y el morir es ganancia.”

V. Exhortación a la Obediencia

A. Hay que cambiar la forma de pensar si vamos a vivir como Cristo, quien dio su vida por nosotros.

B. Si no ha venido a Cristo para el perdón de los pecados, todavía vive bajo el temor de la muerte. Venga a Él hoy por fe, arrepentimiento, confesión de fe en Cristo como su Señor y el bautismo para el perdón de sus pecados.

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
We hear much about religion, most of which is connected with buildings and organizations of various types. Today, much as in the times of Jesus religion is, sadly, mostly about public meetings and ceremony and people using religion for their own enrichment and glory.
When Jesus lived, even the Son of God was persecuted, his identity and the message that he received from his Father were totally rejected, and he was finally publicly executed by the Roman government, at the insistence of the Jewish religious authorities. It has often been the accepted religious authorities who oppress and refuse the truth of God’s word.
Because religion is often given a bad name by those who have perverted it, while they at the same time, proclaim to be practicing it, we are so thankful for God’s definition of pure religion so clearly proclaimed in the verse we have just read. Let us spend some time looking at God’s definition of pure religion.
The first thing that strikes us is the simplicity of the definition. Sometimes when people attempt to define a word or a concept, they complicate it so much, that we end up with something more complicated than when we began. Not so with this definition. It is basically composed of two elements or parts: (1) providing for those are in a weakened position and who have no one to help them, and (2) keeping oneself from sin. Simple enough! It is to this that we should devote ourselves. That is where we must put our emphasis, our possessions, our time, and our efforts.
Much of that which passes for religion puts little of its resources, time and strength into these two things. It is either building great beautiful buildings, or having assemblies and activities that in one way or another attract people. How different from the pure religion that God describes here! Religion, that which connects a person with his God, must do more than just appease the wrath of an angry God. It must do more than just satisfy a primal need to appeal to a greater force to help us against things that we, ourselves, feel too weak to confront. It is not enough that it fulfill our need for community to relieve our loneliness. False religion aims to do all that!
Pure religion must connect the person to his God in such a way as to transform the mentality of the person in two fundamental ways: (1) to become a person who cares for others, and (2) to cause us to keep ourselves pure from sin. At this point in our study, we should become clearly aware that what God is trying to do is to get us to take on those great and notable characteristics of His nature: love and purity. All that God does in relationship to us, his grace, his goodness, and his promises is toward this goal. Just as God cares for us and provides for our needs, he is leading us to show that same care for others. Just as God is pure, he is leading us to be pure. Pure religion leads us toward His nature. We become like the object of our worship. If religion does not do that, it is not not pure religion, and is actually against God and what He is trying to do in us.

I. INTRODUCCIÓN

A. Pensamos que somos libres y que determinamos
el rumbo de nuestra vida según lo que Dios
quiere.

B. Esto es como debe ser, pero quizás no estamos
siempre conscientes de cómo otras influencias
pueden distorsionar a nuestra vista.

C. El mismo hecho que no comprendemos cómo y con
cuánta intensidad estas influencias afectan
a nuestras acciones, muestra la necesidad que
tenemos de estudiarlos para evitar que tuercen
nuestros pasos en la vida.

II. ¿QUE SON ESTOS FACTORES QUE PUEDEN AFECTAR A LA VIDA?

A. Hay Muchos, Quizás No Podemos Hablar De Todos, Pero Podemos Ver A Algunos.

B. ¿Le Controlan Las Opiniones De Otros?

1. Pedro se apartó de los gentiles temiendo
la opinión de algunos hermanos que habían
venido de Jacobo. Gálatas 2:11-13

11 Pero cuando Pedro vino a Antioquía, le resistí cara a cara, porque era de condenar. 12 Pues antes que viniesen algunos de parte de Jacobo, comía con los gentiles; pero después que vinieron, se retraía y se apartaba, porque tenía miedo de los de la circuncisión. 13 Y en su simulación participaban también los otros judíos, de tal manera que aun Bernabé fue también arrastrado por la hipocresía de ellos.

2. Ananías y Safira perdieron la vida por
buscar el favor de los hombres más que
el favor de Dios. Hechos 5:1-11

1 Pero cierto hombre llamado Ananías, con Safira su mujer, vendió una heredad, 2 y sustrajo del precio, sabiéndolo también su mujer; y trayendo sólo una parte, la puso a los pies de los apóstoles. 3 Y dijo Pedro: Ananías, ¿por qué llenó Satanás tu corazón para que mintieses al Espíritu Santo, y sustrajeses del precio de la heredad? 4 Reteniéndola, ¿no se te quedaba a ti? y vendida, ¿no estaba en tu poder? ¿Por qué pusiste esto en tu corazón? No has mentido a los hombres, sino a Dios. 5 Al oír Ananías estas palabras, cayó y expiró. Y vino un gran temor sobre todos los que lo oyeron. 6 Y levantándose los jóvenes, lo envolvieron, y sacándolo, lo sepultaron. 7 Pasado un lapso como de tres horas, sucedió que entró su mujer, no sabiendo lo que había acontecido. 8 Entonces Pedro le dijo: Dime, ¿vendisteis en tanto la heredad? 3. Pablo había dejado de buscar el favor
de los hombres. Gálatas 1:10

Pues, ¿busco ahora el favor de los hombres, o el de Dios? ¿O trato de agradar a los hombres? Pues si todavía agradara a los hombres, no sería siervo de Cristo.

4. Cristo nos dice no temer a los hombres. Mateo 10:28-33

28 Y no temáis a los que matan el cuerpo, mas el alma no pueden matar; temed más bien a aquel que puede destruir el alma y el cuerpo en el infierno. 29 ¿No se venden dos pajarillos por un cuarto? Con todo, ni uno de ellos cae a tierra sin vuestro Padre. 30 Pues aun vuestros cabellos están todos contados. 31 Así que, no temáis; más valéis vosotros que muchos pajarillos. 32 A cualquiera, pues, que me confiese delante de los hombres, yo también le confesaré delante de mi Padre que está en los cielos. 33 Y a cualquiera que me niegue delante de los hombres, yo también le negaré delante de mi Padre que está en los cielos.

C. ¿Le Controla Todavía Su Antigua Manera De Pensar?

Efesios 4:22-24
22 En cuanto a la pasada manera de vivir, despojaos del viejo hombre, que está viciado conforme a los deseos engañosos, 23 y renovaos en el espíritu de vuestra mente, 24 y vestíos del nuevo hombre, creado según Dios en la justicia y santidad de la verdad.

1 Corintios 3:1-4
De manera que yo, hermanos, no pude hablaros como a espirituales, sino como a carnales, como a niños en Cristo. 2 Os di a beber leche, y no vianda; porque aún no erais capaces, ni sois capaces todavía, 3 porque aún sois carnales; pues habiendo entre vosotros celos, contiendas y disensiones, ¿no sois carnales, y andáis como hombres? 4 Porque diciendo el uno: Yo ciertamente soy de Pablo; y el otro: Yo soy de Apolos, ¿no sois carnales?

1. Algunos son bautizados, pero porque no
se esforzaron mucho para aprender y poner
por obra la palabra de Dios, queden actuando
y pensando, en gran manera, como antes.
Romanos 12:2 (renovación del entendimiento)

No os conforméis a este siglo, sino transformaos por medio de la renovación de vuestro entendimiento, para que comprobéis cuál sea la buena voluntad de Dios, agradable y perfecta.

2. Si vamos a seguir pensando y haciendo como
antes anduvimos, según la vista de nuestros
ojos, por qué venimos a Cristo?
2 Corintios 5:7 porque por fe andamos, no
por vista;

3. Puede ser que el enemigo, el diablo, hace
más daño a la iglesia por medio de personas
que son llamados hermanos, quienes no han
cambiado su modo de pensar, que por medio
de los de afuera.

a. Tales son agentes dobles.
b. Bautizado no siempre quiere
decir convertido.

D. ¿Le Controlan Los Deseos De La Carne?
Gálatas 5:19-21

19 Y manifiestas son las obras de la carne, que son: adulterio, fornicación, inmundicia, lascivia, 20 idolatría, hechicerías, enemistades, pleitos, celos, iras, contiendas, disensiones, herejías, 21 envidias, homicidios, borracheras, orgías, y cosas semejantes a estas; acerca de las cuales os amonesto, como ya os lo he dicho antes, que los que practican tales cosas no heredarán el reino de Dios.

1. ¿Le controla el amor a la comodidad?

a. Si Moisés hubiera sido así, no
hubiera huido del palacio del
rey de Egipto. Hebreos 11:24-27

24 Por la fe Moisés, hecho ya grande, rehusó llamarse hijo de la hija de Faraón, 25 escogiendo antes ser maltratado con el pueblo de Dios, que gozar de los deleites temporales del pecado, 26 teniendo por mayores riquezas el vituperio de Cristo que los tesoros de los egipcios; porque tenía puesta la mirada en el galardón. 27 Por la fe dejó a Egipto, no temiendo la ira del rey; porque se sostuvo como viendo al Invisible.

b. Si Jesús, hubiera sido así, no
hubiera venido a salvarnos
de nuestros pecados. Filipenses 2:5-8

5 Haya, pues, en vosotros este sentir que hubo también en Cristo Jesús, 6 el cual, siendo en forma de Dios, no estimó el ser igual a Dios como cosa a que aferrarse, 7 sino que se despojó a sí mismo, tomando forma de siervo, hecho semejante a los hombres; 8 y estando en la condición de hombre, se humilló a sí mismo, haciéndose obediente hasta la muerte, y muerte de cruz.

sufrido para cuidar de la iglesia.
2 Corintios 11:24-28

24 De los judíos cinco veces he recibido cuarenta azotes menos uno. 25 Tres veces he sido azotado con varas; una vez apedreado; tres veces he padecido naufragio; una noche y un día he estado como náufrago en alta mar; 26 en caminos muchas veces; en peligros de ríos, peligros de ladrones, peligros de los de mi nación, peligros de los gentiles, peligros en la ciudad, peligros en el desierto, peligros en el mar, peligros entre falsos hermanos; 27 en trabajo y fatiga, en muchos desvelos, en hambre y sed, en muchos ayunos, en frío y en desnudez; 28 y además de otras cosas, lo que sobre mí se agolpa cada día, la preocupación por todas las iglesias.

2. ¿Le controlan las emociones?

4. ¿Le controlan las preocupaciones y
los quehaceres?

a. Como Marta Lucas 10:40-42

40 Pero Marta se preocupaba con muchos quehaceres, y acercándose, dijo: Señor, ¿no te da cuidado que mi hermana me deje servir sola? Dile, pues, que me ayude. 41 Respondiendo Jesús, le dijo: Marta, Marta, afanada y turbada estás con muchas cosas. 42 Pero sólo una cosa es necesaria; y María ha escogido la buena parte, la cual no le será quitada.

b. Filipenses 4:6-7

6 Por nada estéis afanosos, sino sean conocidas vuestras peticiones delante de Dios en toda oración y ruego, con acción de gracias. 7 Y la paz de Dios, que sobrepasa todo entendimiento, guardará vuestros corazones y vuestros pensamientos en Cristo Jesús.

D. Si Tales Cosas Nos Controlan La Vida, No Podemos
Tomar Parte En El Reino De Dios, Ni Acá Ni Tampoco
En El Cielo.

III. ¿QUÉ ES LO QUE DEBE CONTROLAR A NUESTRA VIDA?

A. La Palabra De Dios Mateo 4:4

El respondió y dijo: Escrito está: No sólo de pan vivirá el hombre, sino de toda palabra que sale de la boca de Dios.

B. La Paz De Dios Colosenses 3:15

Y la paz de Dios gobierne en vuestros corazones, a la que asimismo fuisteis llamados en un solo cuerpo; y sed agradecidos.

C. La Gratitud, Temor, Y La Reverencia Hebreos 12:28

28 Así que, recibiendo nosotros un reino inconmovible, tengamos gratitud, y mediante ella sirvamos a Dios agradándole con temor y reverencia;

D. El Amor De Dios

1. Colosenses 3:14 “Y sobre todas estas cosas vestíos de amor, que es el vínculo perfecto.”

2. 2 Corintios 5:14-15 Ya no vivir para sí mismo.

IV. APLICACIÓN PERSONAL

A. Analice Su Vida, Sus Acciones Y Pensamientos.

1. ¿Qué ha estado gobernado su vida?

a. La palabra, la paz, y el amor.
b. O la situación, las necesidades
materiales, el deseo propio, y la
conveniencia del momento?

2. Si nosotros no somos honestos con nosotros
mismos, todavía Dios sabe lo que nos mueve,
lo que nos causa hacer lo que hacemos.

B. Su Vida Nunca Será Estable, Ni Puede Serlo,
Si No Le Está Gobernando La Palabra De Dios.
Mateo 7:24-27

24 Cualquiera, pues, que me oye estas palabras, y las hace, le compararé a un hombre prudente, que edificó su casa sobre la roca. 25 Descendió lluvia, y vinieron ríos, y soplaron vientos, y golpearon contra aquella casa; y no cayó, porque estaba fundada sobre la roca. 26 Pero cualquiera que me oye estas palabras y no las hace, le compararé a un hombre insensato, que edificó su casa sobre la arena; 27 y descendió lluvia, y vinieron ríos, y soplaron vientos, y dieron con ímpetu contra aquella casa; y cayó, y fue grande su ruina.

V. INVITACIÓN

A. Deje Que La Palabra De Dios, La Paz De Dios,
Y Su Amor Le Gobierne En Todas Sus Decisiones
De La Vida.

B. Venga A El Hoy.

1. Por la fe, el arrepentimiento, la confesión de Cristo
como el Señor, el hijo de Dios, y el bautismo si no
ha sido bautizado como Dios nos enseña.

2. Por el arrepentimiento y oración si lo ha hecho
pero Ud. se ha extraviado.

¿DESPUÉS DE LA MUERTE?

Estoy seguro que la mayoría de nosotros alguna vez hemos pensado en cuanto de tales cosas. Muchos tratan de no pensar de ello, pero no podemos evitar el pensamiento completamente. Realmente, no hay que intentarlo, porque, como Hebreos 9:27 nos dice: “… está establecido para los hombres que mueran una sola vez, y después de esto el juicio,” Puesto que esto es así, sería mejor pensar en estar listo en lugar de tratar de evitar cualquier pensamiento de ella. En Eclesiastés 7:2 nos encontramos con esto: “Mejor es ir a la casa del luto que a la casa del banquete; porque aquello es el fin de todos los hombres, y el que vive lo pondrá en su corazón.” Obviamente, entonces, podemos aprender algo importante cuando consideramos la muerte.

Los que dicen que han muerto y revivido en realidad no lo han hecho, porque si realmente hubieran muerto no habrían vuelto. Una vez que el espíritu de vida regresa a Dios quién lo dio, esta vida ya termino y nadie se revive de aquello. Los cuentos que oímos no son verdaderos, son distintos entre sí, y esto demuestra que no son confiables. Pero, gracias a Dios que él nos ha dado un reporte breve, digno de confianza.

Porque viene de Dios mismo, sabemos que es confiable. No es en cuanto de alguien que murió y regresó, sino habla de dos personas que murieron y no pudieron regresar. Trata, por supuesto, del caso del Lázaro y el Rico que se encuentra en Lucas 16:19-31:

19 Había un hombre rico, que se vestía de púrpura y de lino fino, y hacía cada día banquete con esplendidez. 20 Había también un mendigo llamado Lázaro, que estaba echado a la puerta de aquél, lleno de llagas, 21 y ansiaba saciarse de las migajas que caían de la mesa del rico; y aun los perros venían y le lamían las llagas. 22 Aconteció que murió el mendigo, y fue llevado por los ángeles al seno de Abraham; y murió también el rico, y fue sepultado. 23 Y en el Hades alzó sus ojos, estando en tormentos, y vio de lejos a Abraham, y a Lázaro en su seno. 24 Entonces él, dando voces, dijo: Padre Abraham, ten misericordia de mí, y envía a Lázaro para que moje la punta de su dedo en agua, y refresque mi lengua; porque estoy atormentado en esta llama. 25 Pero Abraham le dijo: Hijo, acuérdate que recibiste tus bienes en tu vida, y Lázaro también males; pero ahora éste es consolado aquí, y tú atormentado. 26 Además de todo esto, una gran sima está puesta entre nosotros y vosotros, de manera que los que quisieren pasar de aquí a vosotros, no pueden, ni de allá pasar acá. 27 Entonces le dijo: Te ruego, pues, padre, que le envíes a la casa de mi padre, 28 porque tengo cinco hermanos, para que les testifique, a fin de que no vengan ellos también a este lugar de tormento. 29 Y Abraham le dijo: A Moisés y a los profetas tienen; óiganlos. 30 Él entonces dijo: No, padre Abraham; pero si alguno fuere a ellos de entre los muertos, se arrepentirán. 31 Mas Abraham le dijo: Si no oyen a Moisés y a los profetas, tampoco se persuadirán aunque alguno se levantare de los muertos.

Este reporte es distinto que las parábolas por los detalles que se dan y la cantidad de conversación que se menciona. También, porque el nombre de la persona se da. Ninguno de las parábolas que Jesús habló mencionaba una persona por nombre.

Este reporte es un estudio en contrastes, porque la vida y situación de las dos personas son extremadamente distintas, uno viviendo en lujo notable, con la capacidad de gozarse de todo lo que tenía, y el otro en pobreza total, y sufriendo de enfermedad que no le permitía proveer para sí mismo. Es difícil imaginarse de dos personas más distintas. No solamente son distintas en lo que tienen materialmente y en cuanto de salud, pero también son totalmente distintas en su situación espiritual.

Pero, sí tenían algo en común. Siendo humanos, los dos eran sujetos a la muerte física, y murieron.

Pero, aun en la muerte, vemos un contraste, pero al revés. Él que estaba sufriendo ahora está consolado y él que había vivido cómodamente está atormentado. Esto nos muestra muy bien el hecho que las cosas frecuentemente son muy distintas de lo que parecen ser. Generalmente pensamos que tener cosas en esta vida quiere decir que estamos muy bien, y que ser pobre y enfermo sería el opuesto. Pero la Escritura nos enseña claramente que pensar en esta manera es totalmente equivocado.

Jesús dijo en Lucas 12:15:

…Mirad, y guardaos de toda avaricia; porque la vida del hombre no consiste en la abundancia de los bienes que posee.

¿Pudiera existir una mejor ilustración de esta verdad que lo que tenemos en el caso de estos dos individuos? Lo que el rico había logrado tener no le sirve ahora para obtener lo que más necesita, la salvación de su alma.

¿Nos sorprende, entonces, que Jesús nos ha dicho en Mateo 6:19-21?:

19 No os hagáis tesoros en la tierra, donde la polilla y el orín corrompen, y donde ladrones minan y hurtan; 20 sino haceos tesoros en el cielo, donde ni la polilla ni el orín corrompen, y donde ladrones no minan ni hurtan. 21 Porque donde esté vuestro tesoro, allí estará también vuestro corazón.

Alguien ha dicho, “No lo puedes llevar contigo, pero puedes mandarlo por delante.” Esto parece estar de acuerdo con la idea que Jesús expresó en las palabra que terminamos de leer.

Por lo menos, Lázaro tenía en su vida algunas migajas de la mesa del rico, pero el “hombre rico” ya no tiene nada, ni aun una gota de agua para refrescar la lengua. Ahora él desea misericordia, una característica que claramente le había faltado en su comportamiento hacia Lázaro. El pide comodidad, pero nada se le puede dar.

Tal vez muchos pensarán que el “rico” fue condenado por ser rico y que el “pobre” fue aceptado por Dios por ser pobre y por haber sufrido tanto. ¡Pero serían equivocados! La condición espiritual de un hombre no se base en que sea rico o pobre, pero más bien, si su corazón se ha sido cambiado para que sea como el corazón de Dios. Es obvio que el “rico” no amaba, y no cuidaba de las cosas espirituales, ni en cuanto de su alma, ni en cuanto de las almas de los que estaban alrededor de él. Su corazón no era como el corazón de Dios.

Evidentemente, Lázaro, durante de su vida, había aprendido amar, cuidar de otros, y cambiar su corazón para que sea en armonía con el corazón de Dios, por su atención a la palabra de Dios. Llegar a ser como Dios no requiere dinero, posición, ni influencia, sino solamente un corazón que busca a Dios y obedece a su palabra.

¡Qué bendición estaba echado a la puerta del “rico.” Si solamente él había tomando el tiempo necesario para conocer a aquél hombre “pobre,” tal vez hubiera recibido de Lázaro mucho más que él le hubiera dado a este hombre pobre y enfermo.

Finalmente, reconociendo que su situación no tenía remedio, sus pensamientos volvieron a sus cinco hermanos. Parece que reconoce que su situación de ellos no es nada mejor que la suya y que ellos necesitaba cambiar, para que no sufran el mismo fin. Qué triste que todos los días de su vida, no dio suficiente atención a sus propias necesidades espirituales ni a los de sus hermanos. Durante su vida, atendendía a las cosas materiales; no había pensado en forma suficientemente serio en cuanto de la realidad de cosas espirituales.

La solución que sugiere para la situación de sus hermanos, al igual al pedido que hizo para sí mismo, envuelve un pedido por la ayuda de Lázaro. Pero, Abraham le dice que provisión ya había sido hecho para advertir a sus hermanos. Le dice: “A Moisés y a los profetas tienen; óiganlos.” La expresión “A Moisés y a los profetas tienen….” no refiere a Moisés y los profetas personalmente, sino a la Escritura que Moisés y los profetas habían entregado al pueblo por la inspiración del Espíritu de Dios.”

El “rico” contesta que si alguien aparezca de entre los muertos, que seguramente esto les impresionaría más eficazmente. Abraham contesta que si la palabra de Dios no les cambia, aun una resurrección de entre los muertos lo haría.

Aquí, Dios está revelando el hecho que su palabra es el único poder necesario para cambiar el corazón de una persona. Por esto, tenemos escrito en Romanos 10:17, “Así que la fe es por el oír, y el oír, por la palabra de Dios.” La gente hoy comúnmente cree que algún “milagro” se requiere para cambiar el corazón de la persona. Están equivocados. No hay otro poder, como Pablo, el apóstol nos explica en Romanos 1:16:

Porque no me avergüenzo del evangelio, porque es poder de Dios para salvación a todo aquel que cree; al judío primeramente, y también al griego.

Si las personas se salvan, no será por el poder de señales, prodigios, o milagros hechos por los manos de hombres. Será porque han escuchado la palabra de Dios y lo han aplicado a si vida al obedecerlo. Esto es la única esperanza.

El relato termina acá. Pero es obvio que hemos aprendido mucho de ello:

  • Primero, que lo espiritual es tan real, y de hecho más importante, que lo material, porque esta vida es por corto tiempo, y la eternidad es para siempre.
  • Segundo, ¡el tiempo para preparar es ahora! Después de la muerte, no hay manera para prepararnos o cambiar nuestra situación delante de Dios. Ninguna cantidad de oraciones, donaciones, o ritos cambiarán nada después de la muerte.
  • También hemos aprendido que lo más importante en la vida no se compra con dinero. Está disponible a cada uno, aun el más pobre entre nosotros. Dios nos lo da libremente. Ninguna cantidad dinero puede salvar a nuestra alma. ¡Solamente la sangre precioso de Cristo puede hacer esto!
  • Hemos visto que la sangre de Cristo está disponible si aprendemos la palabra de Dios, el único poder para cambiar el corazón, y si lo obedecemos.
  • Es evidente también que si vamos a hacer algo por nuestra familia, amigos, y la gente con quienes vivimos dia por día para mostrar el amor de Dios hacia ellos para salvar su alma y advertirles de lo que viene, tenemos que hacerlo ahora. Algún día la oportunidad ya no habrá.
  • Finalmente, podemos decir que esta escritura nos ha mostrado lo que realmente importa en la vida, y que si perdemos esta oportunidad de hacer lo que Dios dice y de llegar a ser como como él, habremos perdido totalmente la razón de la vida, no importa cuáles cosas hayamos gozado acá. Como Dios nos dice en Marcos 8:36, “Porque ¿qué aprovechará al hombre si ganare todo el mundo, y perdiere su alma?”

¿Está ganando o está perdiendo en la vida? Cuando todo se haya acabado, ¿qué será su destino eterno? Considerando todo lo que hemos estudiado, ¿cuáles son los cambios que debe hacer en su vida para que Ud. pueda considerarse exitoso?

MOTIVOS PORQUE ALGUNOS NO HABLAN A OTROS DE DIOS

sino santificad a Dios el Señor en vuestros corazones, y estad siempre preparados para presentar defensa con mansedumbre y reverencia ante todo el que os demande razón de la esperanza que hay en vosotros;

1 Pedro 2:9
Mas vosotros sois linaje escogido, real sacerdocio, nación santa, pueblo adquirido por Dios, para que anunciéis las virtudes de aquel que os llamó de las tinieblas a su luz admirable;

1 Timoteo 3:15
para que si tardo, sepas cómo debes conducirte en la casa de Dios, que es la iglesia del Dios viviente, columna y baluarte de la verdad.

Cada verdadero cristiano debe hablar a otros las buenas cosas de Dios a otros.

Por no estar seguro en cuanto de lo que uno cree

2 Timoteo 2:15
Procura con diligencia presentarte a Dios aprobado, como obrero que no tiene de qué avergonzarse, que usa bien la palabra de verdad.
Colosenses 3:16 nos dice:
La palabra de Cristo more en abundancia en vosotros, enseñándoos y exhortándoos unos a otros en toda sabiduría, cantando con gracia en vuestros corazones al Señor con salmos e himnos y cánticos espirituales.

Lucas 6:45
El hombre bueno, del buen tesoro de su corazón saca lo bueno; y el hombre malo, del mal tesoro de su corazón saca lo malo; porque de la abundancia del corazón habla la boca.

Miedo de lo que pueden decir la gente y del rechazo

Lucas 9:26
Porque el que se avergonzare de mí y de mis palabras, de éste se avergonzará el Hijo del Hombre cuando venga en su gloria, y en la del Padre, y de los santos ángeles.

1 Samuel 8:4-7
4 Entonces todos los ancianos de Israel se juntaron, y vinieron a Ramá para ver a Samuel, 5 y le dijeron: He aquí tú has envejecido, y tus hijos no andan en tus caminos; por tanto, constitúyenos ahora un rey que nos juzgue, como tienen todas las naciones. 6 Pero no agradó a Samuel esta palabra que dijeron: Danos un rey que nos juzgue. Y Samuel oró a Jehová. 7 Y dijo Jehová a Samuel: Oye la voz del pueblo en todo lo que te digan; porque no te han desechado a ti, sino a mí me han desechado, para que no reine sobre ellos.

Cuando la gente rechaza la verdad, no debemos sentirnos rechazados nosotros, sino debemos reconocer que están rechazando a Dios.

Problemas de la conciencia

Sin una buena conciencia, no vamos a sentirnos bien para hablar con otros, y nuestro mal ejemplo puede hacerlo más fácil que rechacen el mensaje que les damos. ¿Qué fuerzas vamos a tener, si nosotros mismos sabemos que estamos separados de Dios por el pecado.

1 Pedro 3:16-17
16 teniendo buena conciencia, para que en lo que murmuran de vosotros como de malhechores, sean avergonzados los que calumnian vuestra buena conducta en Cristo. 17 Porque mejor es que padezcáis haciendo el bien, si la voluntad de Dios así lo quiere, que haciendo el mal.

1 Timoteo 1:19-20
19 manteniendo la fe y buena conciencia, desechando la cual naufragaron en cuanto a la fe algunos, 20 de los cuales son Himeneo y Alejandro, a quienes entregué a Satanás para que aprendan a no blasfemar.

Por no seguir conectado con Cristo por la obediencia

Yo soy la vid, vosotros los pámpanos; el que permanece en mí, y yo en él, éste lleva mucho fruto; porque separados de mí nada podéis hacer. 6 El que en mí no permanece, será echado fuera como pámpano, y se secará; y los recogen, y los echan en el fuego, y arden.

LA LIBERTAD

La libertad es algo que la gente ve como muy importante. Se escucha mucho sobre la libertad, especialmente en las cosas de la política. Pero, aunque se habla mucho, es algo que muchos no entienden bien. Esto se debe al hecho que la libertad tiene varias definiciones, y la gente generalmente habla de ello sin explicar en cuál de los sentidos lo están usando. Vamos a ver las distintas clases de libertad, y como estas afectan la vida.

La Libertad Política

Tal vez esto sea el sentido que más pronto viene a la mente de las personas al escuchar la palabra libertad. Esto es la libertad proveído por estatuto gubernamental. Está disponible solamente a los que viven dentro de los contornos de un país que reconoce ciertas libertades o “derechos humanos.” Estos se brinden a ciertos o a todos, dependiendo en lo que está escrita en la ley o la constitución del país donde viven. No todos tienen la libertad político. En ciertos gobiernos, puede haber libertad para todos, en otros, solamente ciertas personas tienen libertad pero otros no. Algunos gobiernos permiten la esclavitud. En tal caso, hay algunos que no tienen ninguna libertad política. En los tiempos cuando fue escrito la Biblia, la esclavitud era muy común. Por esto tenemos pasajes bíblicos como los siguientes:

1 Corintios 7:21-22

21 ¿Fuiste llamado siendo esclavo? No te dé cuidado; pero también, si puedes hacerte libre, procúralo más. 22 Porque el que en el Señor fue llamado siendo esclavo, liberto es del Señor; asimismo el que fue llamado siendo libre, esclavo es de Cristo.

1 Timoteo 6:1-2

1 Todos los que están bajo el yugo de esclavitud, tengan a sus amos por dignos de todo honor, para que no sea blasfemado el nombre de Dios y la doctrina. 2 Y los que tienen amos creyentes, no los tengan en menos por ser hermanos, sino sírvanles mejor, por cuanto son creyentes y amados los que se benefician de su buen servicio. Esto enseña y exhorta.

Dios nos enseña, entonces, que la libertad política, mientras que es una ventaja cuando sea posible, no es indispensable para vivir, para hacer el bien, o servir a Dios.

La Libertad de Escoger

Esto lo tenemos, no por decreto humano, sino por la manera que Dios nos ha hecho. Al hacernos Dios, nos hizo “a su imagen.”

Génesis 1:26

Entonces dijo Dios: Hagamos al hombre a nuestra imagen, conforme a nuestra semejanza; y señoree en los peces del mar, en las aves de los cielos, en las bestias, en toda la tierra, y en todo animal que se arrastra sobre la tierra.

¿Qué quiere decir ser hecho según el imagen de Dios? Dios puede entender, razonar, y escoger, y nos ha hecho a nosotros con las mismas capacidades. No somos como los animales que solamente reaccionan a un estímulo. Nosotros podemos escoger lo que vamos a hacer. Los resultados pueden ser buenos o malos, según escogemos usar esta libertad. El hecho que tenemos el poder de escoger nos hace personalmente responsables por lo que hacemos.

Cuando escogemos, mostramos lo que nos importa más. Esto habla mucho en cuanto de qué amamos más. Así podemos ver que lo que escogemos muestra lo que de veras somos. Lo que escogemos dice mucho más en cuanto de lo que somos que lo que decimos, porque a veces las personas puede decir muchas cosas, pero no los llevan a cabo, es decir, muchas veces no son sinceras, pero lo que hacen muestra lo que realmente son.

La libertad de escoger es imporantísimo. Si no tuviéramos la libertad de escoger, no pudiéramos expresar el amor. Escogemos con quien vamos a casarnos, escogemos nuestros amigos, y escogemos amar a Dios o no. Escogemos hacer el bien o el mal, porque tenemos la libertad de escoger.

La Libertad Espiritual

Romanos 6:15-18

15 ¿Qué, pues? ¿Pecaremos, porque no estamos bajo la ley, sino bajo la gracia? En ninguna manera. 16 ¿No sabéis que si os sometéis a alguien como esclavos para obedecerle, sois esclavos de aquel a quien obedecéis, sea del pecado para muerte, o sea de la obediencia para justicia? 17 Pero gracias a Dios, que aunque erais esclavos del pecado, habéis obedecido de corazón a aquella forma de doctrina a la cual fuisteis entregados; 18 y libertados del pecado, vinisteis a ser siervos de la justicia.

Juan 8:32

y conoceréis la verdad, y la verdad os hará libres.

Juan 8:36

Así que, si el Hijo os libertare, seréis verdaderamente libres.

Gálatas 5:13

13 Porque vosotros, hermanos, a libertad fuisteis llamados; solamente que no uséis la libertad como ocasión para la carne, sino servíos por amor los unos a los otros.

2 Pedro 2:19

Les prometen libertad, y son ellos mismos esclavos de corrupción. Porque el que es vencido por alguno es hecho esclavo del que lo venció.

Romanos 6:17-23

17 Pero gracias a Dios, que aunque erais esclavos del pecado, habéis obedecido de corazón a aquella forma de doctrina a la cual fuisteis entregados; 18 y libertados del pecado, vinisteis a ser siervos de la justicia. 19 Hablo como humano, por vuestra humana debilidad; que así como para iniquidad presentasteis vuestros miembros para servir a la inmundicia y a la iniquidad, así ahora para santificación presentad vuestros miembros para servir a la justicia. 20 Porque cuando erais esclavos del pecado, erais libres acerca de la justicia. 21 ¿Pero qué fruto teníais de aquellas cosas de las cuales ahora os avergonzáis? Porque el fin de ellas es muerte. 22 Mas ahora que habéis sido libertados del pecado y hechos siervos de Dios, tenéis por vuestro fruto la santificación, y como fin, la vida eterna. 23 Porque la paga del pecado es muerte, mas la dádiva de Dios es vida eterna en Cristo Jesús Señor nuestro.

¿Cómo Está Usando Su Libertad?

Podemos usar nuestra libertad para escoger ser siervos de Dios, o podemos escoger nuestros propios deseos y sentimientos. Cuando decidimos usar la libertad de escoger para desafiar a Dios, mostramos que no creemos su mensaje de amor, su palabra, y saldremos mal. Si usamos nuestra libertad para desafiar a Dios, no somos más fuerte que él. No le podemos vencer.

1 Corintios 10:22: “¿O provocaremos a celos al Señor? ¿Somos más fuertes que él?”

Pero, tenemos que tomar en cuenta que Dios quiere lo mejor para nosotros.

Proverbios 3:5-8

5 Fíate de Jehová de todo tu corazón, Y no te apoyes en tu propia prudencia. 6 Reconócelo en todos tus caminos, Y él enderezará tus veredas. 7 No seas sabio en tu propia opinión;

Teme a Jehová, y apártate del mal; 8 Porque será medicina a tu cuerpo, Y refrigerio para tus huesos.

APLICACIÓN A LA VIDA

¿Cómo está usando su libertad?

¿Tiene Ud. la libertad espiritual que Dios da a los que por amor le obedecen?

Los que siguen en el pecado, son esclavos de sus propios deseos. Pero los que aman y obedecen a Dios, están de veras libres.
